Health Risks associated with Mould

Everyone has the right to a warm, secure and decent home and to be treated with dignity and fairness

Yet many people in England are living in a home with damp and mould, which may put their health at risk.

Estimates of the number of homes in England with damp and mould range from 4% to 27% of homes, or 962,000 to 6.5 million households. The reported figure varies due to differences in how damp and mould is measured and how it is reported. People living in private or social rented housing are more likely to live in a home with damp and mould than are owner occupiers.

Health effects of damp and mould

Damp and mould within the home can produce allergens, irritants, mould spores and other toxins that are harmful to health.Even if visible mould is not present, dampness alone can increase the risk of health problems.

Excessive moisture can promote the growth of microorganisms such as mould and other fungi, certain species of house dust mites, bacteria or viruses. The more serious the damp and mould problem and the longer it is left untreated, the worse the health impacts and risks are likely to be.

Most people come into contact with the substances produced by damp and mould by breathing them in. This means they predominantly affect the airways and lungs.

Damp and mould can cause disease and ill health in anyone, but people with underlying health conditions, weakened immune systems, and some other groups of people are at greater risk of ill-health from damp and mould.

Respiratory effects

Damp and mould predominantly affect the airways and lungs. The respiratory effects of damp and mould can cause serious illness and, in the most severe cases, death. The respiratory effects include:

– General symptoms such as cough, wheeze and shortness of breath

– Increased risk of airway infections, including aspergillosis (an – infection of the airways with the fungus Aspergillus) development or worsening of allergic airway

– Diseases such as rhinitis (a condition causing nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and itching), asthma and other conditions that involve inflammation of the airways (including bronchitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD))

The fan motor typically consumes about 5 Watts of power. Over a year this would cost as little as £7 or less than 2 pence a day. Its smart software enables it to switch itself between heat mode , fan only mode and standby mode in the summer when it is not required. It also uses lost heat from the property and recycles this wasted energy.

The PIV unit sits in the loft, either hanging from a joist or attached to joists with adjustable anti vibration feet. It has a circular diffuser that is installed on the landing ceiling (white, around the size of a dinner plate).

The unit is maintenance free for up to 5 years, after which it is advisable to replace filters to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. Replacement filters are available through us or on Amazon.

With noise levels as low as 9dB(A) in the home, the unit is near silent when in operation.

Yes, for our standard PIV units your home will need a loft.

There is nothing to pay upfront, you will receive an invoice following the installation with our business account details. We accept payment via bank transfer. You will also receive a link to review our services.

We supply and install the Vent-Axia Pozidry Pro heated PIV system, these are made in the UK and are made with 100% recycled materials.

The total amount you will be invoice is £795.00 + vat, this includes everything.

We go through a number of qualifying questions before arranging an installation with you (over email), which we will then carry out an assessment at the time of fitting. This helps us keep the cost of the service low whilst still covering everything required. If however we arrive at the property and a PIV isn’t suitable, you will not be charged for any service and we will advise on other options for you.
